PUTRAJAYA, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- A joint Malaysia-Japan shipbuilding forum was held here Monday with the aim of enhancing the local maritime industry.
Organised by the Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM) and the Cooperative Association of Japan Shipbuilders (CAJS), the event sought to explore collaborative efforts and cooperation between the two associations, AMIM president Tan Sri Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor said.
"The maritime industry is very crucial for the country and cooperation with Japan, one of the leading, still the leading shipbuilding industry in the world, is very useful," he told a press conference after the launch of the forum.
The forum is a bilateral and an interface meeting between Malaysian and Japanese businesses and industrialists involved in the industry, Ahmad said.
The meeting is expected to contribute to the development of the shipbuilding industry and ship machineries industries through an open exchange of views on new development and information on various issues affecting the industry, he added.
Meanwhile, the President of Japan's Sumidagawa Shipyard Co. Ltd, Hiroshi Ishiwata who was also present at the press conference, said that Malaysia should place more focus on research and development in the design of more advanced and high speed motor boats.
"Everytime you build, you improve and you create high level shipbuilding," he said.
As the demands go up on the required machinery equipment, the demand for quality goes up as well to come up with better design, he explained.
"So, everytime you improve quality and level, this is how you develop the industry," said Hiroshi.
Continuous improvement upon an industry will create the supporting industry to catch up with the demands, and this is how Japan developed its industry, he pointed out.
