13th – 15th November 2007
INTRODUCTION
The first Regional Conference on Asia-Pacific Geoparks and Business dialogue 2007 will be held for three days from 13 to 15 November 2007 at the Mahsuri International Exhibition and Convention Center(MIEC), in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia.
The conference is jointly organized by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Ministry of Finance, Kedah State Government, UNESCO, the Ministry of Arts, Ministry of Tourism, Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia, Mineral and Goescience Department, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Langkawi Municipal Council, Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel Agents.
It is being held in Langkawi, a cluster of 99 islands covering an area of 10,000 hectares, which has been recognised by Unesco as a geopark since June 1st, 2007.
Langkawi has a designated area with several geological heritage sites containing valuable
archaeological, ecological, historical and cultural resources.
The conference themed "NETWORKING BETWEEN NATIONAL GEOPARKS" aims to invite participants to discuss the progress of geoheritage conservation in the Asia-Pacific region.
Given the global emphasis currently on the conservation of the environment, the conference is timely as it would be able to create greater awareness on the subject.
It also hopes to provide a platform for scholars and various stakeholders to discuss and exchange ideas on pressing issues on the sustainable use and management of geoheritage in each country.
The conference, which will bring together experts and professionals in the field, hopes to promote among Asia-Pacific countries to develop their own National Geoparks and establish an Asia-Pacific Network of National Parks.
Several technical papers on the networking, conservation, and sustainable development of geoparks in the region will be presented by various experts in the field including Prof Datuk Dr Ibrahim Kommo from Malaysia, Dr Mahito Watanabe (Japan), Dr Alireza Amrikazemi (Iran), Joanne McKnight (Australia) and Dr Margaret Patzak (Unesco) on the first day.
Participants will also be taken for a day trip to the various geoparks in Langkawi including the Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park which boasts the oldest formation in the country and also to the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park which showcases the unique formation of limestone pinnacles.
Dialogues and workshops will also be held parallel to the field trips.
On the final day, issues on conservation, geopark and geotourism will be discussed, followed with a forum on the establishment of Asia-Pacific Geopark Network.
