1.2 Per Cent Increase In Divorce Cases Last Year

KUANTAN, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The divorce rate in the country rose by 1.2 per cent to 22,289 cases last year, from 21,051 the previous year.

National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) Deputy Director-General (Policy) Dr Anjli Doshi Ghandi said today Selangor registered the highest number with 3,558 cases, followed by Kedah (2,407 cases), while the lowest was in Labuan (114 cases).

To overcome the problem of divorce the board provided family counselling for those with marital problems.

"Besides that, we are also trying to get more counsellors by appointing panel counsellors to help troubled families," she said at the Pahang-level Family Counseling Seminar here.

She said 7,557 people participated in 5,829 counselling sessions conducted by the LPPKN's psychology officers nationwide last year.

Of this, said 1,147 were individuals with marital problems such as divorce, domestic violence, polygamy and parenting problems.
